Intent - what do we want children to learn?

At Bucklesham Primary School it is our intention that every pupil, irrelevant of needs, develops such a passion for Computing that they become independent in their use of computing across all three strands of the curriculum, exhibiting positive attitudes towards computing. 

Children should understand that the core of computing is based upon computational thinking. this ability to develop and test algorithms will make them more systematic thinkers and more efficient problem solvers. This has benefits that can be felt in many other curriculum subjects.

 Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. 

Computing should also ensure that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology. They will also be taught how this can be achieved safely, with regular input on key online safety issues. 

Implementation - how are we going to achieve our intent?

Our long term plan for Computing is based on a progression of skills and knowledge right from Early Years to Year 6 (see below).  The children are taught using Teach Computing Units of learning, and opportunities are sought to develop these skills across the curriculum, in Science and DT for example, where children learn to write algorithms for programmable devices.  We also seek extension activities and immersion for some of our older or gifted pupils through connections with BT, and specialist activities that come into school. 

Bucklesham has a set of 16 iPads and a set of laptops and desktops throughout the school that children access throughout the curriculum.  We have micro bits for programming in KS2 and beebots for programming in KS1.

Impact - what will it look like when we have achieved our intent?

Children take the skills we have taught them into High School and their working life.  Children have done well in the past at enrichment events at BT to demonstrate and use their computing skills.
